The previous two energy hacks covered two very simple, easy things that we can incorporate into our lives quickly and immediately – how to effectively breathe and stretch – and also discussed why and how these two foolproof methods give us tremendous amounts of energy 🙂
The third is just as simple and straightforward as the previous two, and like breathing and stretching, it requires ACTION. It’s also something that comes from within (as opposed to consuming copious amounts of caffeine or any uppers).
The next energy generating tip is to take positive action ♥
Woo woo, fluffy bunnies and puppies bullshit, yeah? “Oh so I just have to be nice?!”
Um…my emails have been going out to folks in the roller derby community. We’re a pretty swell bunch, but we hit the shit out of each other. We train hard. We hip-check punching bags while on skates to practice clearing another skater right off the floor. So woo-woo fluffy shit just ain’t really our cup of tea.
…or is it?
Maybe there’s a reason we take it out on the track. Maybe there’s a reason we need that outlet. Maybe there’s a reason we drive for hours and hours, skate several days of the week (if not every damn day), pay to play (that’s right. We don’t get paid to play roller derby. Even the zebras – referees – don’t get paid to serve. We all do it for the love of the game and because we’re so passionate about it), and bust our asses to keep our roster spots, our venue, and our team afloat.
Bonnie D. Stroir said it best several years ago, and this quote is legendary among the roller derby community ♥
So, we all feel run down and stressed quite often. We’re people who live fairly normal lives full of adulting, obligations, responsibilities, jobs, families, and then all the other fun stuff as well.
No wonder why our batteries feel so drained!
Let’s talk about the amazing energy benefits of taking positive action 🙂
When we shift how we think, speak and act, that inspires an amazing change within. For instance, when someone asks how we’re doing, how often do we reply, “I’m tired” or “I’m good” or complain about some shit going on in our lives? Often when I’m doing a seemingly fast transaction (like buying my unsweet iced tea with lemon and light ice from Dunkin Donuts), I’ll default into the “how you doing” crappy question. The preponderance of responses I get are “fine” or “ugh I’m tired.”
Everyone’s fucking tired. Yeah. Suck it up, Buttercup.
Let’s try these instead:
“How, how’s is your day going?”
“What are you excited about today?”
“What are you looking forward to this week?”
“What inspires you?”
“How do you feel about baby goats?” (okay this one would drive me into a happy wildly energetically boosted ramble about how funny and amazing goats are)
“What’s your favorite pizza toppings?”
Listen to how someone responds! When we give someone the opportunity to be enthusiastic and excited, they may actually take that cue and respond energetically! If anything, you’ve given them the opportunity to find something to be excited about 🙂
The truth is we’re POWERHOUSES! We ARE the generators! We have every ability to create our OWN energy! We’re independent, amazing beings – we’re skaters for crying out loud! If we can do derby, surely we can effing BREATHE, STRETCH, and BE…NICE!!!
Curiosity is the cure for loneliness. “Oh, but people should understand how I feeeeeeel, I have all these feeeeeelings. Other people should do that.” Guess what, sugarpants? You’re like the 7+ billion of our brothers and sisters who feel the same exact way.
Start asking others about themselves and their day, and – get this, it’s super important – actually listen and give a fuck or two about what they say. Don’t answer immediately, and don’t “relate”, interject, or interrupt them. Shut up and listen.
I had a GREAT experience with this when I had an appointment with the UCF Business Incubator here in Daytona Beach when I asked Connie Garzon-Bernal about why she does the work she does. In 9 years of serving our community and helping entreprenuers, NO ONE had EVER asked her that question. It made her day, and it especially made mine ♥
There’s a great interview with Mark Anthony Bates on The Mentee Podcast which has influenced my interactions in a HUGE way! It’s been an incredibly energizing and powerful experience and the results I get daily are incredible. Definitely give it a listen!
Sending you lots of love, light and energy ♥
